Noma shines in HIFA 2013 sold out shows

The Really Stupid Things Men Say HIFA 2013 shows sold out a full week before the first show happened. Nomashawekazi Damasane, who plays the character of Kate Khumalo; a Women and Gender studies doctoral student excelled in the shows. She plays several characters and she moved from character to character with impressive ease and got the audience laughing, pondering and surprised at the many truths in the play.
The title is very captivating and many people are curious as to what stupid things men say and they are not disappointed at all after watching the show as the play is very insightful and gets people thinking, debating...
Is The Really Stupid Things Men Say a comedy? No. Or at least, my initial objective when I set out to write and eventually directed and produced the play was not to make people laugh. The objective was and remains to examine the relationships between men and women. The relationships between men and women have been so complex and greatly to the disadvantage of women for so long that phrases like, 'men are from mars women are from venus'.
It is tempting even to me, the creator of the show, to measure the show's success by how much people laugh during the show. But I always have to remember that the importance of the play lies in what people take away with them from the show. What discussions, debates and arguments happens way after the show is over?
HIFA was just one stop in hundreds of other stops we will do throughout the country and all over the world and we hope The Really Stupid Things Men Say will help mend the faulty relations between men and women. We hope the play will give women a better fighting chance in a world that is so hostile to them.
